Ash’s move to Lonsdale
Ash is an autistic, non-verbal individual with a severe learning disability. He joined our Lonsdale Drive Supported Living Service in March 2019 following a long stay in a mental health hospital.
Professionals initially predicted he would struggle to adjust and would most likely return to hospital within two weeks due to the severity of his behaviours. With the right structure and support, Ash has gone on to thrive.
Key interventions included daily schedules and objects of reference for communication, rota board updates to reduce anxiety around staff changes, incident reflection workshops, structured teaching and skill development, sensory accommodation including label-free clothing and a jacuzzi for relaxation, and health and wellbeing initiatives.
Working with Speech and Language Therapy, we developed communication tools tailored to Ash’s preferences. Objects of reference — such as a key for park visits or a plate for meals — helped him express his needs more clearly.
Since joining Lonsdale Drive, Ash has made exceptional progress. He continues to live happily and independently within the community, enjoying stable health, strong relationships and meaningful daily engagement. More than five years on, he has not required hospital readmission.
“Everyone at Lonsdale Drive is so happy that Ash has remained stable and happy in the community for over five years and has not required hospital readmission. We are proud of him everyday.” — Colleague
